Chris Fleming

Former CEO Southern DHB / Lead DHB CEO Health of Older People

Chris Fleming is an experienced leader having been the CEO of South Canterbury, Nelson Marlborough, and Southern District Health Boards (DHBs). Chris stood down from his most recent role with Southern DHB in June 2022, after a career spanning 30 years in the health sector.  For the past 16 years, Chris has been the Lead CEO for Health of Older People on behalf of the 20 DHBs. During this time Chris has chaired the Joint ARC Steering Group and been involved in key ARC initiatives including the Grant Thornton Aged Residential Care Service Review, the Funding Model Review, and the roll out of interRAI across our sector.

Chris has also been the lead DHB representative for the Care & Support Workers Pay Equity Settlement and in recent times has strongly advocated for the need to address Pay Parity and career pathways for aged care nurses. Chris believes the current contracting and funding model used for ARC has passed its use by date and a considerable rewrite is needed.

Instead of carrying on in a role with Health NZ, Chris took the opportunity to step away from the high-pressure health sector and has acquired retail businesses in Te Awamutu and Rotorua, which he runs with his wife and son. Chris is still providing consultancy support into the ARC sector as he wants to see the challenges the sector is facing addressed. Chris will share his perspective of these challenges and the opportunities moving forward.
